Zach Rouse wins the first night of the Ryan Bard Memorial

By Lynn Hensley on May 29, 2011

A total of 27 Southern Sport Modifieds signed in for the 4th annual Ryan Bard Memorial at Aztec Speedway tonight. Ryan Henley was the only car to not start the feature as he popped his engine in his heat race. Julie Boettler started on the pole and held the lead for nine laps in this 30 lap event. Zach Rouse had moved to the outside of her and ran that way for about six laps. Rouse finally gained the lead on lap 10 but couldn’t pull his usual vanishing act as three cars stayed close. The hard charger of the night was Ronnie Gould of Oklahoma. Gould started his black #1 sport modified in the 6th row and slowly worked up to 2nd with 4 laps to go. A caution created a restart with those 4 laps left and Gould moved to the outside of Rouse. For 3 laps, it looked as though Gould would take the lead and win but he just couldn’t quite clear Rouse. On the final lap Ronnie Gould dropped in behind Rouse and followed him to the checkers. A very exciting finish for the sport modifieds. Zach Rouse will try for two in a row tomorrow night. Finishing 3rd behind Gould was Randy Eitel and in fourth a young Dakota Kibel. Julie Boettler finished in 5th after leading early. Rounding out the top 10 were Jeff Jennings, Zach Hamilton, Jordan Eddleman, Brandon Tenski and Ace Eavenson.

In talking with Ronnie Gould after the races: Gould said he had the wrong gear in the car for this track (his first time here). He might be the one to beat tomorrow night. Part 2 of the Ryan Bard Memorial will take place at 7pm Sunday.

The IMCA stock cars roared onto the track with 20 cars for a scheduled 25 lapper that ended up being cut to 20 laps. Many cautions waved in this one. Lap 2 saw a 6 car pileup with Traci Jennings exiting the race. Arlen Cochran led for the first several laps but was overtaking by Danny Stevenson and Stevenson never looked back. He went on to win his first feature at Aztec Speedway. An unusual number of spins and crashes occured in this stock car race. Several cars sustained heavy sheet metal damage and some a bit more. Rex Higgins was involved in an early crash with three others cars. After getting a fender “nailed” back onto his car and a couple of tires, he returned to start moving toward the front….not to be. Higgins car was pinned against the front stretch wall. His car climbed the wall and he ran on two wheels from the flag stand to turn one…more damage and two more flats. Here is how they ran behind Stevenson: In 2nd was Allen Bradley followed by Steffan Carey, Lee Moss and Frankie Hendershot in 5th. Sixth went to Luke Rowe followed by Darin James, Travis Southerlin, Larry Bradley and Bill Ferguson in 10th.

In the IMCA modified 25 lap feature, nineteen of the twenty cars that signed in took the green. Brody Spangler (recognize the name..looks alot like Aaron Spangler…could be his son) was on the pole and in front when the checkers fell. Brody led every lap of this 25 lapper even though several cautions tightened the field. Brody Spangler earned this one as he took on each new challenger on the restarts. Brody Spangler won by 2.055 seconds over the 2nd place Regan Tafoya. Tafoya started 8th and dropped to 13th before finding the line that put him into the 2nd spot. In 3rd was Danny Bradford followed by JJ Harpole and Garrett Higgins in 5th. Higgins traded for this modified from the Baldwin family. Pretty good run for him considering he had to restart in the back after an early spin out of 5th place. In sixth was Robert Reed, next was Brandon Carley followed by Kevin Brown, Tyrone Yazzie and Ryan Spangler in tenth.

And finally the mini stocks came out for a calm 15 lap feature…wrong! Several spins and one hard crash later saw Breanna “Breezy” Hopper win yet another race. Tom Gallagher was 2nd with Amanda Hamilton 3rd. That’s all that finished. Jeannie Henley spun her mustang off turn 2 and was hit hard in the front by Darrel Cordary. Jeannie’s car is a total loss and to make things worse…her husband, Ryan Henley, popped his engine in a heat race. Cordary’s car was heavily damaged also.

Thanks to all for coming out tonight…pretty good crowd on hand and looking for a bigger night tomorrow evening. Racing will start at 7pm but the gates open at 2pm tomorrow. “Fools Gold” will be on hand with live music from 2 till 6.
