Recap of June 13
Friday the 13th…a full moon…and the racing was great and safe and very close. Part one of a two night show went like this: The modified feature had Aaron Spangler leading for 14 laps with Zane Devilbiss racing side by side with him for five laps before Devilbiss finally got by on lap 14. Devilbiss went on to take the feature win with Spangler 2nd and Regan Tafoya 3rd after having to restart in the back early in the race. In fourth was Allen Bradley followed by Wayne Soares. One caution late in the race made for a fast race. The rest of the finishing order was: Robbie Chiles, Ryan Spangler, Jeremy Farley, Shane Devilbiss, Trevor Combs, Aaron Wheeler, and David Davis. Heat race winners in the modifieds were: Aaron Spangler and Zane Devilbiss.
In the Sport modified 20 lap feature 15 cars took the green and ran a caution free race. Juanita Faddis was in front for the first 6 laps before Joey Klemish in his Mopar car took over. Joey never looked back as he went on to a commanding win. The race for 2nd through 7th was back and forth between 6 cars. When the dust settled, Julie Boettler finished 2nd with Ryan Henley next. In fourth was Juanita Faddis with Rex Higgins 5th. Sixth on back were: Brian Carey, Jordan Eddleman, Luke McCormick, JC Yates, Glenn Spangler, Bub Hughs, RL Henley, Roger Cordary, Darrell Cordary and Dillon Terry. The heat race winners in the sport modifieds were: Juanita Faddis, Jordan Eddleman and Rex Higgins.
The stock car feature of 20 laps turned in another caution free race with Ron Brewer leading the first several laps until Stephan Carey eased on by to take the lead and the win. The race for 2nd was a close one with Brewer and Kenny Hendershot battling it out. Brewer held on for the 2nd with Kenny in 3rd–his worst finish of the year at two tracks. In fourth was Jeramey Bradley, and Frankie Hendershot in fifth. Sixth on back were: Richard Trujillo, Skylar Heath, Josh Turnbull, Larry Bradley, Traci Jennings and Scott Livingston. Heat race winners in the stock cars were: Kenny Hendershot and Stephan Carey.
The sport compacts saw a few cars show with Austin Maxwell winning the feature and the heat race. Second in the feature was Josh Smith with RaNai Toler exiting early after hitting the wall. Ranai was ok.
The hobby stock feature saw repeat, repeat, repeat winner Freddie Brooks take the checkers. Early competition was Jason Duggins in Randy Dorsett’s car. Duggins was in front early but spun out of contention. Taking 2nd was Patricia Phillips with Kelly Klemm in 3rd and Jason Duggins was fourth. Paul Dorsett was fifth with Jason Hockinhull, Luke Klemm and Jessica Radojits rounding out the finishing order. Luke Klemm and Freddie Brooks were the heat race winners.
First night intermission the fans saw the first of many Wheelbarrow races. We pulled people out of the stands and they teamed up to run one lap around the Kart track for a chance to win $50 sponsored by Matrix Title Loans in Farmington. The winners were Ben Wallace and Robert Cattagaia.
The second night of racing at Aztec Speedway this weekend is in the books. For the most part all of the racing was the usual great stuff you expect at Aztec. Maybe an exception or two popped up. In the Modified feature Jeremy Farley jumped out to the front for four laps until a hard charging Regan Tafoya came up to take over the lead. Last night’s winner eased past the Farley car and started a challenge for the lead that culminated with another side by side dual for several laps. On lap 16, Zane Devilbiss put the #18 in front with a move to the bottom of turn one and completing the pass on Tafoya down the backstretch. The only caution came out on lap 19 that set up a one lap shootout for the win. Devilbiss held off Tafoya for his 2nd win of the weekend with Mark Rodgers a close 3rd and Aaron Spangler 4th. Spangler was boxed in on the final lap or he might have been in the hunt for the win. Finishing 5th was Shane Devilbiss. The rest of the field in order were: Robbie Chiles, Allen Bradley, Ryan Spangler, Wayne Soares, Trevor Combs, Jeremy Farley, Aaron Wheeler, and David Davis. Heat race winners were: Mark Rodgers, Zane Devilbiss and Regan Tafoya.
The 20 lap sport modified feature had 15 cars take the green. Jordan Eddleman jumped out front for 3 laps until the Mopar car of Joey Klemish came roaring by on the outside. Klemish and Eddleman then pulled away from the pack with Eddleman trying over and over to take the lead back but to no avail. Klemish went on make a clean sweep of the weekend. Eddleman held off challengers for the last three laps to keep 2nd spot. In third was Julie Boettler with Rex Higgins up to 4th and Ryan Henley fifth. Sixth on down were: Brian Carey, Glenn Spangler, RL Henley, Luke McCormick, Killian Carey, Juanita Faddis, Roger Cordary, Darrell Cordary, Bub Hughes and JC Yates. Heat race winners were: RL Henley, Julie Boettler and Rex Higgins.
The Stock car feature of 20 laps saw Kenny Hendershot back in his familiar spot, Victory Circle. Hendershot pushed his #7 past Richard Trujillo on lap 3 and never looked back until he noticed last night’s winner in his mirror, Stephan Carey. Carey was close but just couldn’t make the pass. After Kenny Hendershot and Stephan Carey, Larry Bradley took 3rd with Frankie Hendershot 4th and Richard Trujillo 5th. Rounding out the field was Skyler Heath, Ron Brewer, Josh Turnbull, Scott Livingston, Travis Southerlin, Michael Farley and Jeramey Bradley. Jeramey had a rough night with a few altercations with other cars. Heat race winners were: Larry Bradley, Kenny Hendershot and Stephan Carey.
The Hobby feature took about an hour which included a 30 minute red flag due to the ambulance being summoned to the pits for a medical emergency. Several cautions were out for the hobby feature with a familiar face back in front. Randy Dorsett took the win with Freddie Brooks 2nd and Luke Klemm next in 3rd. Fourth went to Jessica Radojits forllowed by Paul Dorsett and Jordan Hockinhull. Heat race winners were: Paul Dorsett and Freddie Brooks.
The sport compacts had only three cars with one of them not making the call for the feature. Two cars ran 8 laps with Ranai Toler taking the win and Austin Maxwell in 2nd. Ranai also won the heat race.
Intermission on night two brought out the Suitcase Race with the Sportmod division being represented.
The contestants were going for the $50 prize from Carland in Farmington. The contestants were Darell Cordary, Kilian Carey, and Damen Lopez. From the start it was Damen that proved he was faster in the car and at putting on womens clothing than the other two men. Damen was first across the finish line, taking home the $50 from Carland.
