2011 in Review!

2011 in Review!

By Mike Tenski

Looking back on the 2011 season, we saw some of the best racing in years. We had close season championship points battles, the highest competition level I have seen in years, the car count kept growing, and the addition of the CLMA Late Models was a huge success. The big races were packed with race cars and fans and we only had a few minor problems, all in all it was a fun and exciting season.

Now it is time to get the 2012 season hammered out. Aztec Speedway will be an IMCA sanctioned track again this year. We will continue to work with Fairgrounds Speedway to give our local drivers the opportunity to chase state, regional, and national championships.

We are changing one class though. The Mini Stock car count dwindled last season due to several things, so we are going to a very inexpensive introductory class called Hornets. The Hornets are a small cars (Taurus, Lumina, Civic, Camery) as long as it has a 6 or 4 cylinder engine from the factory it is ok to run. Kick the windows out, take the plastic off, install a cage and let’s race.

We have an agreement with the RMMRA (Rocky Mountain Modified Midget Racing Asso.) to race at Aztec Speedway on the Ryan Bard Memorial event on May 26, 27. This will be the first time the midgets have been back to Aztec in ten years. Be sure to watch the Chili Bowl this year because some of these guys will be here.

The NMMRA non-wing sprint cars will be back as will the CLMA late models, and the Mini Sprints.

We have talked to the New Mexico Mud racing Asso. (mud bog racing) and we are scheduling an event with them at the beginning of the season.

We have contacted the Colorado Truck and Tractor Pulling Asso. and are working on getting the nasty multi-engine tractors and custom built pulling trucks down here for an event.

We will be hosting the USRA modifieds this year for a few shows. One event will pit the best IMCA modifieds against the best USRA modifieds for an large purse and bragging rights.

Aztec Speedway will be having the annual rules meeting on January 12, 2012 at San Juan College room 7104, the lecture hall in the copper top building; this will start at 7PM and run until 9:30PM. We will be set up for you to purchase the reserved pit stalls ($75 for a season) and your race car numbers ($10 for a season).

Hope to see you there.
